A project is being done in the "Big Gulch" area of the city of Mukilteo, WA.

On March 14, 2007 the Board of Commissioners of Olympus Terrace Sewer District (OTSD) declared an emergency in the Big Gulch area. The years of unrestrained storm water has undermined the main sewer line for the community of Mukilteo for which OTSD, working in conjunction with the city and state agencies, is currently working on a solution.

The stage was set in 1967-1970 when sewerage flows were reversed from North to South. That was when Big Gulch Sewer was built.

When development arrived, things changed. The acres of hard surface resulted in increasing runoff into the Gulch. These flows have eroded and mined away the majority of the dirt over the pipe.

In December 2006 OTSD spent $600,000 to repair a 200-foot portion of exposed pipe just hours away from failure.

Tie-downs were added in January 2007.

A few near misses have occurred since then.

Repair of the Big Gulch sanitary sewer line is important because loss of this line means the majority of the community would lose sanitary sewer service. The homes and businesses within the red boundary area would be affected.

An action plan has been developed and we are moving out immediately to implement the plan.
